The grommet is installed in the outer panel and serves two purposes:

1. Prevent the panel hole from wearing 
2. Act as a stud retainer.

This grommet's length will vary depending on the outer panel's thickness. Grommets are secured in the panel by flaring. The retaining ring grommets are the easiest to install, least expensive, and are reusable but, in applications subjected to severe vibration, the crimp type is recommended.
